Hello martin,

I'm also looking for Telecomms work in NZ and so far have found it difficult. I have registered a resume at www.workingin-newzealand.com today so hopefully it will turn something up and hopefully the link will help you a little.

Also I'm leaving the forces after far too long and could do with some pointers about the industry in our neck of the woods ( I'm in Cumbria ). I'll have the following quals in Feb to boost 13 yrs VHF/HF work;

BTEC Advanced Award in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
NEMAP NOCN Principles and Practice Digital Cable Communication Transmission Systems – Level 2
NEMAP NOCN Digital Cable Communications System Installation – Level 2
City & Guilds 6156 New RASWA ( Signing, Lighting and Guarding )
City & Guilds 3466-04 Data Communications Installation and Testing
City & Guilds 3466-02 Multi Mode Fibre Optics Installation and Testing
City & Guilds 3466-03 Single Mode Fibre Optics Installation and Testing

Any help in either way would be appreciated and reciprocated. As we're going for the same thing it makes sense to team on research?

I haven't submitted our EOI yet but we're 100% commited to residence as soon as possible, pending house sale, etc over here, etc.

Have you had your quals evaluated by the NZQA? If so, how did you go?

Good to know another is out there, and from the North West with the same aim. Cheers, Rob, Workington.

Cheers for the advice Martin, that seems like a good move since totaljobs has turned up totalnothing! We're looking at a similar time-scale ourselves in moving to NZ. Seems about the standard for planning, etc.

I'll post my email address in a PM to your inbox on this board, if you want to info-share then that would be great. We're constantly researching at the moment, eight eyes are better than four ! Cheers

Hi Martin,

I presume, like me, you were in the RSigs?

Certainly the one thing you might find Extremely beneficial would be a minimum BTC HNC (engineering).

Dont know what trade you were however you might want to contact Blackburn College of Further Education and speak to someone about the VETS program. I did this and as a result will have an HNC Telecoms Engineering by the end of this month (however due to work commitments it has taken me longer than anticipated).
email VETS@blackburn.ac.uk and tell them your experience, trade etc..
They will assess your route to gaining the HNC. Its cheap, recognised and they are very helpful.

I left the forces in '99 and have been contracting to many operators and vendors (currently with Siemens).

My family and I are hopefully moving out in July. I am actually in the process of joining the RNZAF as an officer ( I have my selection board in April). I figured that I might want to put a little something back into the country for a few years!

Another option for you as, as far as I can see, you dont have the required quals to earn the 50 points would be to take a holiday there and set up a few interviews before hand. If there is a genuine shortage and you get an interview and job, you could obtain a work permit then you are on your way!.

I will be off to NZ in april but I have also arranged two interviews with Major Telcos out there and I will probably arrange more too (on the off chance that I am not selected).

Take it easy.
