Hi all

My hubby and I have decided to try to get to nz under the skilled migrant category and were wondering if anybody has any advice on qualifications, Andy has an ONC in telecommunication engineering has done an apprenticeship with BT and has a management certificate from the OU and has been a manager for 8 years with a total of 21 yrs experience with BT.But we are unsure whether these will be recognised or not, telecoms appears on the occupational shortage list but not on the priority one. Has anyone any experience similar to this who could offer advice and info on applying for jobs within this field.

Look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Hi

Is the qualification a BTEC OND or HND. THese diplomas are recongnised and are in the NZIS list if recognised qualifications. This means that you dont need a NZQA assesment.

You work experience can be counted and is in a comparable labour market. So without a job offer you can apply under the skilled migrant cat.

cheers

Hi Abdul

Many thks for your reply, the only problem we have now is that Andy has an ONC which is a certificate rather than the diploma it is still BTEC however. Do you have qualifications in this field if so how easy did you find it to get a job presuming that you are in NZ it didn't say on your profile.

Thks once again hope to hear from you again if you have any more info.

Hi Lisa

Might be a bit more expensive than you wanted, but you can always send his qualifications off to NZQA to have them assessed.

Hello Lisa

If in doubt, get them assessed by the NZQA, as stated above. My experience with them was both fulfilling and fast. My details were a hand full of entry-level Telco Quals, the main one being C&G 3466 Fibre Optics.

I had the one qual assessed, but the beauty is the NZQA accept, and in some cases demand vocational experience relevant to the qualification. In my case this was a military Telco qual backed up by 10+ years work experience. I was very surprised they even looked at a relatively obscure qual, i.e. a military one, but the outcome, when they tied the two together was a Level 4, and 50 points.

Get your man to put forward his most eminent qual, and make sure he tells them all ( there is a facility for this, when they start emailing you ). All his experience and supporting qualifications from when he first started with B.T.

Having read your post I have no doubt whatsoever that your husband's quals and experience, both superior to mine, will bring you 50 points at least, maybe more considering his managerial experience.

Hope this helps, and good luck. C.

Can fully agree with Caven on NZQA looking for vocational experience.
Although they only officially assess courses lasting one year full-time or more, I got a 6 month teacher training qualification accepted as being equivalent to the full one year course because my previous work experience made up the difference.

Hi Lisa,

I am in a slightly similar position to Andy.

As you know according to the list of recognised quals an ONC doesn't give you anything. I know it means more study but if Andy upgrades to an HNC Engineering (Telecommunications) it will be worth the 55 or so points you will need to come off the EOI board.

I was fortunate that I did the HNC Engineering and having secured a permy job in Auckland I now have enough points.

Look down the Work to Residence route. If Andy gets a job offer in a skill shortage area like ICT you can get residency that way after 2 years.
