personally I don't think crime rates are high in NZ (in my personal day to day experince of living in NZ). OK, people get burgled, but there isn't the yobbish element and the petty crime (graffiti, rubbish, fly tipping, anti-social behaviour) that you get in the UK.

You might want to look at the NZ gov online site, and have a look at the crime stats. www.govt.nz and compare it to other countries.

There are a few stats that NZ excells at. We are the 2nd country behind the US in the per capita number of prisioners, and Maori, and polynesian make up the largest % of this figure.

High teenage prenancy, mainly due to poor job choices and welfarism in lower socia-economic groups.[/url]

Hey y'all,

When considering moving to New Zealand I always thought Auckland was the only real option - jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Now, however, Taupo has been creeping into my head as a very real option. It is small, yes, but perfectly formed. Razz

Accessible to all parts of the North Island, a beautiful lake with surrounding mountians, geothermal activity. Skiing in the winter, and swimming in the lake in the summer. Schools, shops, an airport! Nutcase The place will be overrun by tourists at times, but that means there will be all of 100 people there! They have the best public showers in the whole of NZ, too. Best of all, it's not Auckland. Bonus points Nice One

It has taken a while, but I have finally realised that Auckland is not the only option. Taupo is nice, Napiers not bad, Hastings is okay, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, Kaikora, . . . Wink

Can't wait fingers crossed

Rodders,

Rotorua is indeed smelly. No Taupo, on the other hand is not. Yes The smelly stuff is further out of town and therefore doesn't impact on the old nasal buds. When I was in Rotorua there was also a big explosion in the park where half the floor disappeared, not as much of a danger in Taupo.

Taupo gets more and more appealing. Nice One

Hi Helen,

Have you thought about Tauranga? It's only a smidgen cooler in summer than Napier. But it also doesn't have a university.

Actually there is a small university in Tauranga, the University of Waikato at Tauranga. My wife and I have been researching there as well. The courses aren't as robust as those in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, etc. So it depends on your major. Here's their website:

http://uwt.waikato.ac.nz/courses/index.shtml

Take a look and see what you find.

Here's some other info on Tauranga...

The area population is about 91K making it the seventh largest city in NZ. It's the fourth fastest growing area in NZ with a 16.5% increase since 1991. Average rainfall is about 1.4m or 55 inches which makes it one of the two sunniest places in NZ. However, when it rains it apparently pours as they hold the record for most rain in one hour! Eek

We liked the looks of the place when we visited and will spend some more time there in a couple of months to see how we really like it. Nice One

Any other input on Tauranga or the Bay of Plenty in general would be most appreciated! Smile

Taupo is a beautiful area. cool We spent several days there as well as Rotorua. Unfrotunatley we stayed right by the lake in Rotorua...the smell was unbearable Nutcase so we headed a little ways out of town and it was just fine. They say you get used to it, but I'm not so sure. No

I jogged the coastline of Lake Taupo in the mornings and didn't notice any smell at all. Rotorua isn't that bad if you get away from the active areas, but Taupo is much more appealing...highly recommended! Excellent Bungy jump! bungee

Cheers! Smile

I'm stunned that nobody has suggested Nelson. In my mind it offers one of the finest lifestyles in NZ. Endless sunshine (althought admittedly cool at times), mountains, sea, Abel Tasman National park, low crime statistics, great local wine and seafood., easy ari access to Wellington. I admit, the university is missing but certain study is available at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Don't be lured by the big city "sophistication" of AKL. Look south!

I thought I'd bring this thread up to the top again because some of it might be of interest to Kim39 (Suburbs of Auckland thread). It's also very quiet on the Nelson front and, as Gerry rightly points out, Nelson sells itself as a lifestyle destination.

We want it to be:-

Warm and sunny
Appealing to the eye
Family friendly

and have:-

Low crime

and be within driving distance of:-

Good schools
Good shops
A good university and/or other higher education opportunties.

Could anyone help pinpoint the best location please?

Ok - I'm on dangerous ground here trying to comment on the best place in NZ (when, lets face it, 90% of kiwis would describe their current location as the best place). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I thought I would throw Dunedin into the pot. Climate wise, relative to Auckland it is not as warm, and it may or may not be as sunny. But it would compare fairly well to the South of England for example.

On the other criteria listed it would probably edge out Auckland, excepting trendy shops. IMO it has the best set up of any of the NZ cities for bringing up kids, very good schools and the most popular university.

For those people looking for an alternative, then please have a look. Whats more, it is still very affordable to buy a home here.

Here are some links if you're interested:

ps if climate is important then the Hawkes Bay (Napier), Nelson and Blenhiem are probably the best NZ has to offer. They are smaller regional cities so that won't suit everyone.
