Hi all:

My belated Merry X'mas!

Besides all the other gruesome obstacles within the skilled migration category, one major issue, which I assume you all must be fully aware of, is the catch-22 situation.

Simply put, a job offer is a must before your marks may stand out. But literally, most of the employers require that you have PR or a work permit before you're even considered.

This is a stupid "chicken and egg" situation. And this is the mire I've found myself caught in.

Personally, I'm from China. A master's student in one of the most demanded fields. Speak and write near-native English.

But I can't find a job. Not even a part-time that is relevant to my study.

I know anti-Asian racism is one main issue, which may need another post.

But the Catch-22 is even more frustrating.

Any idea?

You cannot assume that a one of the "main issues" of your not being hired is due to your race.

It is possible that you were not hired for several reasons. Maybe you are deemed "overqualified" which means employers doubt whether they could retain you over a long period of time.

On the other note, maybe there were more qualified candidates for the positions offered?

Did you follow up with the employers that you contacted?

rgou,

I could say that it is a frustrating reality. It is like a quest for the missing holy grail. Confused

In the case of racism, well it is evident from every corner of the world and from whatever country you came from.

We just have to stick it up for ourselves to pursue our dream of moving there no matter what obstacle we face. ( I think I have read this somewhere Nutcase )

We'll just have to keep trying. Othere people have been successful so why cant you and me.. Smile

thanks for your posts. and thank you for your encouragement.

it is a fact that most of the employers noted explicitly that only persons with a work permit or residency may apply or be considered. How do we cope with that? If the employer has already said so, explicitly, would i still go ahead and apply?

what i hate is not that i might be refused, for whatever possible reasons. what i hate is that i am not given the opportunity. you know, you are out even before you have a chance to speak up.

many thanks.

Hi Ricky,

I've just joined thie forum and posted a message last week very similar to your own, regarding the 'Chicken and Egg' scenario. I'm actually from the Uk and so the anti-racism doesn't really apply. But what I have found is that after spending 9 months in NZ living with my Kiwi partner trying to find a job, it was near enough impossible due to the fact that one of the first questions on all application forms is 'are you legally entitled to work in NZ'. Talk about frustrating. I'm just about to embark on further enquiries and wondered if you'd discovered any developments on the subject?? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
