WE hear in the states dont know what qorn is due to the fact that the FDA has banned it, over fears that it might kill people due to allergic reactions.
There was a 60 minutes expose on it.
God bless the government, dont you love them telling us what we can eat!!!!!!
I have a freind that cant eat shell fish, I wonder if the government iis going to take that off our store shelves soon? |

Hi, Mark,
Boulder, Co is fabulous! very hip, very 'healthy', everywhere you look majestic mountains and young, energetic, outdoorsy, green'couscious, sportsloving young professionals ... very expensive though ....
and you're right - the us government is there too .... we actually took a trip (by car with our then 13 month old) this past christmas - 3 weeks/6000 miles around the country - searching for a new home to raise our little one ... and you know what - from here to vermont (canadian border), montana and back - it was all the same fiber, just a shade or two different .... same fear, same corporate america, just plain - the same.
whitefish, montana IS nice(close to the canadian border, very cold, extremely scenic though..) - especially if you have an independent way of making a living - then again they've just 'reintroduced' the grizzly bear up there - and people are having a hell of a time...
Justin!
yes, the good ole FDA - maybe quorn has anti-cancerous properties (mushrooms do you know!); maybe it's too close to a natural antibiotic like penicillin - maybe it can't be put into a pill and so it's banned! maybe people wouldn't have so many allergies if the FDA would bann all that crap people are encouraged to eat - maybe they could bann genetically modified organisms - that'd be a good start .... ok ok - gotta take a breath now

Quorn...interesting comments.....any more info on why it was banned in the USA? I assume paranioa about mycotoxins can be extremely poisonous but then so can aflatoxins found in peanuts Are peanuts banned in the USA????? I think banning guns for general ownership would be a better way to go for long term safety but I assume the FDA has little input there |

Now that we're completely off-topic... As far as I know, the FDA has not banned Quorn in the US. There's no mention of it on the FDA website, which classifies mycoprotein as GRAS (generally regarded as safe). The Center for Science in the Public Interest (aka the party poopers who want us to stop eating movie popcorn, Chinese food, and doughnuts) has been pushing relentlessly for a ban, but without success yet.
Considering the kind of junk we Americans regularly ingest, a little manufactured protein isn't going to hurt us much... |

First off karl you nailed it.
And oddly enough, I believe all U.S flights have banned peanuts due to the fact that concievably, someone could open a bag in first class exposiong peanut dust to a traveler in coach AND KILLING THEM.
Secondly, I am not sure if the FDA has banned it, rather they are preventing its importation. If you really care as to the particulars contact the folks at 60 minutes.
All I know is it aint on the shelves at the local market. |

Hi
I agree with the above comments about the kiwi dollar - it does not go far at all! Great when you get out here - all that dosh for your sterling but once you are only earning dollars - it suddenly hits home that you aren't as rich as you thought you would be! My pay is appalling in view of my qualifications, skills and responsibilities. Apparently though, my salary is good for NZ. I knew wages were lower in NZ but it was still a shock when I got my first pay and realised it had to last for 2 whole weeks!! ( I would have spent the equivalent sterling in one whole day in UK, probably in Next!)

There's quite a bit of organic produce around including dairy and meat. easier to get hold of a variety of food groups if you live near a main population centre....supply and demand of course! |

Some organic shops in and around AKL and some lines at supermarkets. It's there but you have to search for it! Foodtown has some organic produce lines.

sorry to go on about quorn but i thought I'd check out once and for all if you can buy it in NZ. I've been told yes by a couple of people in the past but didn't know if that info was accurate.
So I e-mailed quorn company and here is the reply...
Thank you for your recent enquiry about the availability of Quorn
products in New Zealand.
Quorn products are currently available in the U.K., U.S, Eire, Sweden,
Switzerland, Belgium and Holland, although there are plans for their
availability to other countries in the future.
Quorn is not currently sold in New Zealand and at the present time
there are no plans to begin distribution in New Zealand.
When introducing a product into a country there are issues
relating to regulatory approval and distribution logistics
to be addressed before products can be made available for sale.
As Quorn products are sold chilled or frozen, it is also not
feasible to despatch small quantities for direct sale. As products
become available in more countries, details will appear on our
website at http://www.quorn.com/
so not good news then!!
