| I was just thinking about the different sorts of reputations that British cities have. Like don't go to London to make friends and Liverpool being friendly but rogue-ish and so on. Do cities in NZ have different reputations like this? Where would the friendliest sort of place be? Cheers. |

Hey Ian,
That is one of the best things about NZ - all the people are freindly. Honestly, they are all generous, welcoming, hospitable, freindly, and fun.
Some would have you believe that Aucklanders are the scum of the earth, but to be honest, when I lived there they were nice.
Wellington has a bit of a rep for being trendy and cool, but that's not a bad thing! Christchurch is cool and, yes, the people there were nice when I lived there. Dunedin is a Uni town so students galore, but they are cool too. So all in all, you can't really go wrong. You will just have to decide where you live on the rugby team that you like the most...
P.S. You forgot to mention that Brummies are known for the wonderfulness

Hi Dan-ish,
First time I've heard that
It's good to hear that you found everywhere in NZ is pretty much friendly.
I must say, other than a pleasant experience in WH Smith a few days ago I've been pretty appalled by the level of grumpiness and bad service I've had recently.
How did you people who have lived in NZ find Kiwi businesses/tradesmen for friendly, helpful service? Cheerful and better than Brits? Or just about the same? |

Hi Ian,
My personal experience is that tradesmen in NZ are considerably more helpful and friendly than in the UK. Maybe I've just been lucky but that's what I've found. |

Likewise, I have found shop personnel, post office people, strangers on the street, neighbours all to have been friendly. Having worked in a shop myself while I was there, I found them all to be very nice (with one exception, but there is always one!)
On one particular occasion in Auckland we were sitting on the porch listening to the Tua V Lewis fight on the radio and could see a Kiwi couple doing the same a few doors down. After the fight (Lewis won ), they came over and chewed the fat for a bit, even providing drinks for us ! Just one of many happy experiences from all over NZ with great people!
Just like being in Brum really, but a bit sunnier |

All this good news is worrying
p.s. Now that I see the recent xmas sales disaster WH Smith has had, my cynical side wonders whether their staff had been told their own shop's figures were poor and to pull their socks up. |
