Oh, it's bad!
Frankly I find the "free to air" channels totally unwatchable. The quality of programming is not bad, but the frequency, poor quality and repetition of the commercials makes it all but impossible to retain interest in a show.
I resort to watching only Sky TV, which frankly is not much better on many of the channels, but which does offer some commercial free stations albeit mainly in the premium package which is about $70 per month.
If I particularly want to watch a show on one of the commercial stations, I tape it and then try to watch it later, only to discover that I actually don't know how to program my VCR and I have either the wrong show or a blank blue screen.
The result of this is that the local video stores send me a Christmas card every year...........
On the plus side however, there is nothing to keep me indoors so I take advantage of the many other things that NZ has to offer. |

It's bad...Its very.... very ...... bad. Its probably worse than Al-Jezeera!
Its also very funny...particularly the home made commercials in the regions...but their comedy value soon wears off!
Why on earth do you think they are so good at rugby!!!!!
The news isn't too bad.
The answer...DVD, Video and SKY movies! |

Sorry Lesly,
I can't help on the one - I'm childless so I don't really pay any attention to kids programming.
Do you think your kids might like rugby?

Hi Gerry,
My oldest son adores football, and he's really good at it too!! But he was very pleased when I told him about rugby in NZ!
He will be 8 on sunday, I hope children can join a rugby team at this age.
Still we wonder if there 's not one small, tiny footballteam in NZ he could join??? Maybe we 'll try to build up one ourselves!! Anyone interested to join our team?
My youngest (7) isn't really into the sports thing, he likes computers, he 's an internet freak!!!
Cheers, Lesly |

Hi Lesly
I can't speak for the whole country but in Nelson there seems to be an active soccer community, with teams in all age groups. Rugby is obviously a more popular sport and they have "diluted" non-contact or less contact forms of the game for younger kids (boys and girls), as well as the regular mini-rugby which does involve tackling. So there is something for everyone.
Of course, if you are interested in having a try yourself, there are plenty of women's teams and mixed touch rugby (non-contact) is a very popular sport. You know you don't want to let the boys have all the fun...........

TV in NZ is bad to what u have in the US.
But I find some of them very amusing and fun..
My Fav is the show Border Patrol.. Its about real experiences by NZ customs police.. you will be amazed of what people bringing in with their luggages and not declaring them..
One that I cannot forget is an israeli tourist had been fined for NZ$200 for not declaring a Banana... I can still remember the looks on his face
Lesson is always declare... |

Hi lesly, I've been dying to use these smilies and your question about children's TV has given me the chance:
Not to put too fine a point on it, children's TV is - looks up thesaurus........ abhorent, appalling, awful, bad, beastly, desperate, dire, dreadful.........and those are just the first four letters of the alphabet.
I can't compare it with Belgium but children's TV here is very poor compared with the UK (and I know that the UK's children's TV has been deteriorating too - a prime example of this is Newsround, a programme that used to take the news of the day and present it in a form suitable for children, now seems to be obsessed with the lives of so-called celebrities such as the Beckhams...... )
An example of the crassness of children's TV in NZ is that on Xmas day a couple of years back, during a programme for pre-schoolers, they showed trailers for Men Behaving Badly - adult TV.
Children's TV here seems mainly to focus on semi-violent U.S. and Japanese cartoons. There was one good, informative programme called Suzy's World which had a science focus but that, apparently, has been dropped.
To tell the truth, my parents have been very good about video-taping children's educational and information programmes in the UK and sending them out to us.
We've also bought quite a large number of good British and old-style Disney entertainment videos (and more recently DVDs) for the kids that they can watch free of ads and inappropriate trailers.
We're probably on the old-fashioned side, but we believe in allowing our kids to have a childhood. The programmers who work for NZ TV channels wouldn't appear to agree with us.
If your son likes soccer he'll do okay. NZ now has more soccer players than rugby players. |

| We didn't spend much time watching TV on our recent trip to NZ but I do like to catch the news/weather in the a.m. Here in the States our news programming is not great (US news media motto is "if it bleeds it leads" meaning news stories focus on sensational, attention-getting stories rather than anything of substance). I was quite taken aback by a news host on an over the air channel (NZ1 I think) a.m. news show. This host was just so incredibly rude to guests, co-hosts, etc it was really unbelievable. I thought he set a bad example, but maybe that is just a Kiwi version of the US media's penchant for being outrageous to bring up the ratings. Wish I could remember the guy's name but I am sure any NZ'er will know who I am talking about...? |

Hi JCM,
I'm glad you could finally use those smilies!!
I will carefully tell my kids the bad new about childrens TV in NZ.
Belgian TV for children is fine, we have lots of UK programs
Starting tomorrow, I will video-tape their favourite programs.
My son adores Beckham, so that won't be a problem.
I' m also happy to hear that there are lots of soccer players in NZ. My son is really good at it, so it would be a pity to waist the talent he has!
Cheers, Lesly |

it looks like you're not alone in your assessment of children's tv in nz, jcm.
Children's TV packed with violence
02 April 2004
By TRACY WATKINS
Packing your kids off to bed early to avoid TV violence?
Forget about prime time. It is during the afternoon hours when children are most likely to be watching television that graphic scenes of violence fill the screen.
A report on TV violence shows that New Zealand children are being exposed to some of the highest levels of TV violence in the world – and cartoons are among the worst offenders. Pay TV Sky's Nickelodeon cartoon channel was rated as the most violent channel.
Cartoons averaged 18.7 incidents of violence an hour, and the report found that there was more violence during afternoon children's viewing times than during supposedly adults-only late-night viewing.
The results have alarmed Green MP Sue Kedgley, who pushed for the report. "It appears that some of the cartoons our children are watching are little more than animated thuggery."
But some kids are not convinced.
"We don't really see them as violent, we just see them as action," said Wellington viewer Hedley Dew, 9.
His favourite cartoons included Yu-Gi-Oh – one of those rated as having "extreme violent incidents".
But he thought it unlikely violence in a cartoon would affect his behaviour. And he had seen some incidents on the TV news which were more violent.
"If it's about wars I think it would probably be a little more violent."
Twelve-year-old Dylan Bird thought cartoons probably were violent, including one of his favourites, Dragonball-Z. "There's lots of fighting in it." He did not consider that harmful to himself, but for younger children it might be.
The jury is also out among the experts, who say there are no definitive studies about the effects of cartoon violence on children. "Which is why we've recommended that continuing research be done on that," Television Violence Working Group chairman Rajen Prasad said.
"Intuitively we feel there is something rather destructive about that . . . but there seems to be some connection where children realise very early on that `these are inanimate. They are cartoons, they're not real'. "
The working party recommends reshaping and extending the powers of the Broadcasting Standards Authority to address and monitor television violence, but says regulations are adequate. TVNZ chief executive Ian Fraser, a member of the working party, said people should not dismiss the findings.
"It would be all too easy to say cartoons are just for fun and all the violence that is shown on cartoons is essentially trivial."
But it is not just cartoons that have placed New Zealand up with the United States as having among the most violent TV in the world. Promotional clips for prime time programmes have been getting more violent and they are often run at a time children children are watching.
Mr Fraser said TVNZ had got the message.

My brother sent us tapes of Suzy's world and another prog that had Suzy hosting it, my daughter loves them! Sad to hear they've dropped the show |

Despite the lack of TV, my kids (all five of them) have never been happier.
there is so much else to do and to look forward to that TV is not an issue.
I do buy the odd DVD and brought a load with us but they watch at most 5 hours TV a week now. With a beach 5 minutes away and great weather why waste it indoors.... |
