I just read New Zealand is a hot spot for tornadoes! I used to live in Florida and I think I've had enough twisters for one lifetime- so where in NZ is the least amount of tornadoe activity? |

According to this short article:
| Quote: | | The great majority of tornadoes in New Zealand occur in the North Island, particularly around the Bay of Plenty at about 38° S, and along to Auckland, where there were about 17 in a small region (5). There is another concentration on the western coast of Taranaki near New Plymouth, and twelve were observed at that town between 1961-1975. The places with most tornadoes tend to be relatively well populated, so there may be many more unobserved tornadoes elsewhere. |
For general bad-weather data, try the NZ Metservice. |

Yes, there are tornadoes and also water spouts - I've not seen one personally though.
The tornadoes are just babies compared with those in the US Midwest. There are not the same "high temperature meets low temperature air masses" to generate the energy generated in US tordanoes.
I'm sure I read recently that the UK was one of the most likely places in the world to get a tornado - but like NZ tornadoes they lack energy and so are not to be feared in the same way that US ones are. |

| Yes I'm sure your right JCM. I remember reading something like the UK has the most tornados in the world per square mile. But like you say they are pretty harmless, as most of them never touch down. |
