I wondered that, so I did a search and here's what I came up with...
http://www.tranzscenic.co.nz/ Looks far nicer than our trains in the UK!

FANTASTIC!!!
And just $99 from Wellington to Chchurch!! Yay.
We are arriving in Auckland 22nd September and were wondering how best to get to Chchurch by 24th September whilst being able to see some views (i.e. not flying!) This looks like best bet...
We won't be missing the wonderful UK trains that's for sure!!!! |

Even more astounding - have just gone through their booking system and the total cost for hubby and I to travel from Auckland to Christchurch is just NZ$380 - and that includes the ferry from Wellington to Picton.
Bargain!
And I do like the sound of the open air carriages!
Oh god, I am getting more and more excited by the hour - is there no limit to the surprises to be found in NZ?!!

There's also the rail link connecting Christchurch (east coast) and Greymouth (west coast), which crosses the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass National Park.
Reputedly one of the top ten rail journeys of the world. |

Only NZers would say that...
They also claim "green Credentials" for a country where they burn wood in winter like there is no tomorrow...
horses for courses.
Dont get me wrong though.
The rail and road journeys in the South island can be spectacular. |

I did say reputedly.
Having said that, I just got back from a week of hiking through the mountains where that train line passes through. |
