Hi All -
I'm trying to find out a little more about the live music scene in
Wellington & establish which bars or venues would be good to approach
regarding getting gigs
.
If anyone could chime in here & give me a few pointers, I'd be grateful.
Also, where would be good, cheap-ish areas to live - I'm guessing that the suburb areas of Hutt, for eg., would be less expensive than central Wellington.
I think something like $150 per week would be about my budget - is this realistic?
Cheers!
Dave. |

Dave: what genre of music do you play/write?
I have a Kiwi friend who used to be in a band, and lived in Wellington for a while. I could mail him and find out about venues..... |

You could have a look here -
Scroll down to the bottom for some mp3s.

Obviously, with a view to getting work I play a mix of originals & covers - but these are my own songs.
Thanks.
Dave. |

Great music Dave!
Is that you playing the guitar in the songs?
I play the guitar myself, I follow lessons in group. It's terrible to leave that behind. Maybe I found
a NZ guitarteacher now????? |

Hey thanks Lesly -
Yeah, it's me playing everything.
If you're around in Wellington in September I'd be glad to teach you. In fact, that gives me a very good idea for earning a little $ aside from gigging...:)
Cheers!

My teacher found a hole in the market here in Belgium with his guitarlessons! He started with 10 persons (that includes me, although I'm only 28, we are the 'seniors') and now has about 200 students. His secret is teaching guitar without music reading. We started with some easy chords 3 years ago, and we now start reading tabs. Lessons in group are great!
Maybe it's worth trying, Dave!
Cheers, Lesly |

Hi Dave,
Beautiful music, I really enjoyed it!
I've mailed my friend who used to live in Wellington, so I hope he can provide some useful advice as to venues.
I've done a quick search to come up with info on venues, and music - related links (such as representation, etc) in NZ:
NZ On Air: http://www.nzonair.govt.nz/pag.cfm?i=352
Kiwi Music Links: http://www.netcd.co.nz/links/KiwiMusic.html
Muzic.net.nz: http://www.muzic.net.nz/links.php?cat=11
New Zealand Music Services Directory (Cyber Edition): http://www.musicnz.co.nz/nzmsd.html
(You've probably already found these links, but I hope they're of some use.)
I don't know if you really want to limit yourself to Wellington? It seems like the bulk of artist management and representation is in Auckland..... |

Hey Charlotte -
Thanks very much for the links!
I'm slowly but surely putting my feelers out there!
Glad you liked the tunes too :)
All the best,
Dave. |

| I am from the usa and we are hopefully moving to New Zealand in few years, of course my husband will not be able to get points for a professional musician ,and we will have to try to get in on my points. But he is wondering what it was like as far a gigging out. He would need time to find a band to join, but how is the acoustic solo thing. He plays and sings rock, country blues and lots of orginals. Is it hard to find a modern rock band to join? :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: |

Hi Lori!
Sorry, I don't know anything about the music scene in NZ, other than what I've written here.....(it's also been a few years since I've been in the music industry).
I would say the best bet for finding out about gigs would be to follow the links I've listed, to find out about venues.
If your husband has a demo, then it would be best to take that around the venues when you get there.
In the meantime, you can also check out the classifieds for 'musicians wanted', to give you an idea of what the scene is like in NZ ahead of time.
keep us posted! |
