Christchurch seems to be filling up with people from this forum these days.
I've not been out to Raeward (near the airport) recently but I noticed them advertising on Canterbury TV last night.
Braeburn apples 49c per kilo.
Bananas 79c per kilo.
Potatoes $1.99 per 10 kg bag
Carrots 29c per kilo.
Kumara $1.99 per kilo.
We used to go to Raeward in the past but had stopped going because their prices had increased to about the same as the supermarket's. Are there any regular shoppers out there who know if lower prices are becoming the norm at Raeward again or is it just a one-off? These prices are certainly a lot lower than supermarkets at the moment.
Would people elsewhere in NZ (and everywhere else too) mind saying what their fruit and veggies are costing at the moment? It would be interesting to see a few national and international comparisons.

Just to let you know from way on the side here in Quebec, Canada
These are grocery stores prices not a special market. Some of the market stores may have better prices.
Braeburn apples, $3.98 per kilo
Bananas, .40 cents per kilo
Potatoes , $3.99 per 10 lbs or $3.98 per kilo for "new" potatoes
Many of the vegetables can be grown in our own garden so we tend not to buy that during the summer.
Fruit is another story here in Quebec....only berries are grown locally at this time (strawberrys, raspberrys, blackberry and blueberries)...We will be able to pick apples in October...
We tend to get some better prices as fruit from Ontario start coming onto the shelfs in late August...

Those prices look pretty damned hard to beat. I think this time of year most fruit and veges that are available are really cheap, especially root crops. The best bargain I ever saw was in a local New World with Kiwifruit at 69c a kilo - not bad for one of the better vitamin C sources you'll find.
You'll find a lot of second grade fruit in NZ shops too, especially places like Raewards. This is because all the first grade stuff is exported to those who want to have perfect looking fruit, and most kiwis are happy to have something that just tastes good.
I must say, we are eating much more fruit and veges here in NZ, and making a point of choosing stuff that is in season too. |

I don't think Raeward would be at all happy with what you've said. Particularly since I don't think it's true - unless they have gone down-market within the last few months and the recent prices advertised reflect this. Have you been to Raeward's in Christchurch in recent times Macs Gold? |

Hi Abdul,
800 Harewood Road,
Cnr of Johns & Harewood Road.
I didn't have it to hand so I did an internet search. Surprisingly, they have a website with prices etc.

I've never been to the Christchurch one. Maybe it differs from the other I have been at.
But I'll stand by the fact that in NZ you will often get fruit with blemishes, oversize, undersize, whatever doesn't meet the definition of perfect fruit that some of our export markets demand. Its not down market at all - its good fruit at good prices.
I'm a fan of real food or things like the 'slow food' movement in Italy. I disagree with engineering fruit and veges to conform to some supermarket managers ideal. So what I was saying was a positive thing, sorry I didn't explain this. God help me if I say something bad. |

Hi JCM
Went to Raewards and bought some fresh fruit and veggies.
The prices are very competitive but not for all. I think most of the items beat what I had paid for at the Countdown.
Thanks
