Hi all,

Ok, trying to think of the fun side of Chch - a break from rentals, jobs and visa's Razz - what are the beaches like in the Chch area and, more to the point, how safe is the water ? Riptides? Creatures ? (pleeeeze don't let there be jellyfish!) Eek

AND, we are keen to take up sailing - are there clubs in Chch - is it something that is quite popular?

Thanks in advance for info!

I cant comment on beaches in chch, but believe rips are common throughout NZ. The kiwis will Iam sure be all to quick to assure you that there is nothing nasty in the critter dept in the whole of godzown. That said, I seem to remember reading that there is one species of spider to be wary of, but it is veryvery rare. So, NOTHING like Australia then so dont panic as Jonesy used to say.
I dont think they get jellys, but sharks are known to visit. To be honest, you are probably at more risk from over-relaxation than from anything else.

i just read that chch has the purest domestic water supply in the world! that's impressive. (it's untreated too....)

Rolling Eyes can't help you with what's in the ocean water ..... i'm hoping to see whales and dolphins and loads of colorful fish with my little one!

Oh yes! We love scuba and I've previously started a post on good dive spots etc - apparently Fiji isn't far to go and, compared to prices from here, is cheap to get to!

Here's hoping the statutory holiday is raised to 4 weeks in 2004 as proposed, currently I understand NZ'ers have just 3 weeks a year to explore ARGH! Eek

Hmmm do they have a lottery????

ps: sounds like you two need to set up an eco-tourism business so you can ski and dive and do your thing ALL the time while getting paid. (as if that weren't somewhere already in the works, huh?! Smile )

... But you DO realize... that if you happen to be into such things, NZ is the best place in the world to explore for giant squid!! Really!!

I recently read an article about some guy based out of Auckland who has, in vain to date, devoted his life to catching a baby giant squid (I guess they're not so giant when they are babies) and raise it up in captivity -- an endeavor with which the giant squid have not been terribly cooperative.

Widely-reported encounters with this enormous, shy creature have occurred off the coasts of NZ, and once, the body of a giant squid washed up on a shore near Wellington.

Cool, huh??

Oh wow - you are so on my plane!!

I'd love to run an alternative holiday hotel - somewhere where visitors can stay with no mobile phones, no tv, no radio, etc! Good home grown food, eco-friendly throughout but with a certain "wired" class - Uhoh - i know what I mean!

On top of that some extreme sports guiding (hubby would love that), art classes, holistic therapies, etc etc, gallery, local crafts - I could go on, and on, and on.... Nutcase

I'm in marketing, hubby is in IT and we'd both have no probs running a small outfit.

So, once we are in NZ and have residency... who knows!

*dreaming*

oh i want to see that squid (= the longest animal with over 200 foot long tentacles) and a blue whale too (= the largest animal that has EVER lived - over 100 ft. long - bigger than any dino!) - got to love children's books - i also know lots about ants and rainbows and stars!

now Moorf - now you're talkin' - let's stay in touch Smile
