We are currently making a list at the moment, of all the things to ship over, but have now reached a dilemma.
All the advice says take as much as you can with you, but I have read that most houses in New Zealand have built in wardrobes.
Can anybody verify if this is true, as I don't see the point of shipping these over if they won't be needed.
Also is there anything else you would say is not worth bringing over from normal day to day items?

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

True most houses do have built in wardrobes but not all! If you have space bring them...at least you can sell them on if they are surplus to requirements! If they are of little value though save yourself the bother and buy if needed...I'm assuming they're not Chippendale of course!

Hi,

All furniture and stuff that you can buy in the UK, you can buy the equivalent here. Only store I miss is IKEA.....and antiques are expensive if you like that kind of thing.

Smile Hi
Can you help me,
I'm not materialistic and although we do have some nice things, i'm not all that bothered about taking them, i only want to ship out things like hubby's tools, ( he's a carpenter) photo's and kids things, i read above that you should take everything, why is this?
I feel that we would need things like beds, settee's, iron, kettle, etc before our shipment could arrive and that i'd get annoyed waiting, this has been playing on my mind a bit, so if anyone could offer advice that would be great as i was under the impression we could easily replace things once in NZ? Confused

There is no shortage of anything here (at least not in Christchurch) but you will be amazed how much you spend in your first months here and this will not be helped by having to replace items you could have brought with you.

By all means throw out junk that you will never use, but you will find willing buyers for much of it here and at higher prices than in the UK.

Hi Robert.

Thanks for replying as the thread didn't exactly answer my question.

I guess my point is, did you not need the stuff you shipped out before it arrived?, for example, We do have a nice relatively new leather settee but it's only a settee! and i'm thinking we would need to sit on something before it arrives and i'm just trying to weigh up the cost of shipping and the related stress, we could sell our stuff here and buy over there and have none of the packing/shipping/waiting worries. Confused I 've lived out of a backpack for months of my life so am used to making do, so long as my kids are ok then so are we. Smile

Is there anyone who feels this way or who has only bothered to ship things of emotional value out and if so did you wish you'd bought anything in particular and for what reason or perhaps you may think i wish i hadn't taken, for instance a cooker as you could have got one cheap in NZ?

Thanks in advance for your comments Nice One

Lisa - when we moved from our house in Scotland (4 bed!) to this place (1 bed flat) we sold EVERYTHING that wasn't personal / functional / needed for flat...... I took alot of persuading ....!

At the time I was mortified - all these "things" I had sold that were "mine". But... 2 months down the line I don't miss a THING - in fact, I can barely remember what we HAD! We are now sitting on a crappy sofa bed in a room no bigger than my previous study (hahaha) but boy we feel good to be rid of all the "stuff" that we could so easily have paid to store (a fortune)!

Now we shall take just our personal effects, stuff that "means" something, and functional items and we will start afresh over there! Scary but exciting too!

Just my 2-pennies worth!

Lisa

We are shipping most of our stuff apart from kitchen appliances!

We also were worried because we would need it before it arrived, but I have been told that you can rent furniture if necessary.

We are however going for a fully furnished rental so this isn't a major problem for us anymore.

Razz Thanks you guys Yes

Moorf, i thought maybe i was missing the point and that i was mad not to ship out our stuff, but was having trouble working out why? after all it is NZ and not some third world country where i wouldn't get what i can here and with the strength of the pound against the dollar shouldn't be too expensive........comments please!

Anymore comments would still be welcolme Nice One
