We were all set on Nelson, until I found out I can't get my full Bachelors degree there. Sad

So now it's back to either Wellington, or Auckland. I CAN'T MAKE UP MY MIND. It's driving me nuts. I think I prefer Wellington, but I'm not too convinced about the job opportunities for counsellors/psychotherapists?

However, I do plan to continue my education until I qualify as a psychologist, so......

Hi Charlotte

Wellington is full of politicians and bureaucrats, all notoriously worried about what others think of them all the time. Wink

You'll get lots of customers....... Laughing

Ideally would like Christchurch or Dunedin way - but really it will depend on my hubby, who is in IT, getting a job offer and living there - we can always move once we get residency!

Anyway, any place that gets a foot in the door is a bonus. Just watched another "depressing" documentary/drama on how the UK will be in the next decade and I really don't want to be here if it all comes crashing down. No

I'm sick of the bad manners (adults AND children), fed up of the moaning, sickened by the invasion of new houses into the countryside (we live in Scotland and even here and in the Highlands it is hard not to pass a new development of some sort. Sad

We're mid-thirties, no kids (and no intention) and want to see the world and experience it and... rather than just sail through in a couple of weeks etc... to feel the country and its people. Nice One

I hear that the Otago / Dunedin / Christchurch is like Scotland with its scenery and weather (yet better) and we want to be as far from the rat races of Welly and Auck as possible!! However, I have also heard that places down there can be quite depressing - high unemployment in manufacturing etc... can anyone shed any light? There's a particular place we are looking in for a house - its called Lawrence (near Dunedin) - does anyone have any knowledge of this place - can't find much on the net! Rolling Eyes

Don't get me wrong, I like cities - i just prefer to visit them instead of live in them!! Hence why we moved from London to rural Perthshire!

Perhaps I am mis-informed and there will be multiple building estates going up in NZ - I don't know - does anyone? People are queueing up to get into NZ from what I hear (although I hope "because I liked Lord of the Rings" isn't an acceptable reason!).

Hopefully it will be people, like those on this board, who are truly captivated by the lifestyle and people of NZ and want to join in and not change it..... and to have a better life for themselves and their families.

So, hi to everyone - you now know I ramble on a bit Nutcase but there is just soooo much to find out. Buying numerous books Rolling Eyes

And, as you may have gathered from the timing of this posting (7am), I've been up all night researching, I can't sleep thru excitement and we don't even know if we'll get in yet! fingers crossed

If you read through to the end of this "short" message I'll buy you a beer when we get there..... Clink

I have been looking at pictures of the north stunning all the way around. I say someone say that it is humid, any comparisons of sorts for us from america. I dont mind rain, but if it is to humid like georgia or florida forgetr it. I have been spoiled by southern Californias mild weather. We are looking for an area in N.Z that has warm weather and low humidity and abundant inexpensive quality wine Razz

We can't decide between Auckland and Wellington - I'm a bit put off of Wellington after reading on the nz met website that it has on average 172 days a year with wind gusts over 60km per hour! Eek Also the weather's warmer in Auckland apparantly, but I'm not sure if it's going to be too City-like, being from the little old town of Poole in Dorset and liking the smaller scale of things whilst also being close to larger Bournemouth and even bigger Southampton for more choice of shops, bars etc... Confused

North Shore City seems nice - Not too big but close to Auckland City (where we've got more chance of getting jobs) - I think I'll go for that unless anyone can convince me otherwise!

Hi, We are moving to Tauranga/Papamoa/Mt Manganui area in June. Does anyone have advice on areas that are popular or ones to avoid? Smile Advice on good schools would also be appreciated.

Hi all. We are hoping to live in or around Whitianga on the Coromandel pen. Yes it is very quiet. Absolute heaven. We will probably struggle to make a good living but what the hell. More to life than £££`s ($$$)

smog...all lies (sssh macs, dont give away our secrets..takes a lot of wood fires to make that stuff)

dont know what you are talking about!!!!

Nic

ps Auckland has it too..when it isnt raining...Ive seen pics of the sky tower with a red haze around it (but theirs is pollution) ours is a little pollution, fires and no wind.

That is why you live near the beach, so all the haze goes inland to the posh suburbs!!!

2007 all open fires will be banned, and only woodburners that are clean air approved will be used....

hope you dont have asthma...we are built on a peat marsh and very damp

not saying anymore....putting you right off!

Hmmm v. interesting... luckily we don't have asthma but we do smoke Embarassed but intending to give up (again!) soon.... hate it.

So - there could be a good bit of money to be made in "wood burner conversions" in a few years time... time to get qualified LOL Laughing

So come on - sock it to me - what else do we need to know about Chchurch - am a little concerned as a friend who is back from travelling Asia and who spent 10 weeks in NZ dropped a bomb on us last night - he said Chchurch was a "hole" ! ARGH....... Uhoh

bless him, I bet he is single and about 28...?

If you dont have mates here, it can be a pretty lonely place as there is not much happening "adventure wise' that is in the mts or queenstown....

I would make no decisions until you get here...and if it aint for you...there are lots of other places that are magic, and just move on (dont sign a fixed lease, just a periodical one, then you only have to give 3 weeks notice to move...the landlord has to give you 3 mths notice to vacate)

It is a plain city..no water like syd/auck....but the coast/beach is nice...if walking on it is your thing, I dont think a single guy would appreciate it!!! (lots of girls running on it...in little tight tops...maybe he didnt visit there!!)

Noooo he's late thirties and was with his partner!!

You're right of course, we shall make our decisions when we have been there a while and travel around - Dunedin is now an area we might look at although not convinced we'll easily find IT work there.....

What is the average length of a rental there - here it is usually done in six months assured tenancies - would we find it easy to get a shorter one or do most sign up for a long one and give the 3 weeks notice.... nice to know we would be protected by landlords giving 3 months tho!!
