Hello again, My understanding is that the nzis is helpful when you get a job offer, and offering you a work permit isn't the same as a residents Visa so it only takes a short while.

If you are in a field that they are short of over there (and not just those on the OSL) they seem to be very accomodating. While they have to protect their own workforce they aren't daft and know what NZ needs., they actually want people there. They are not the opposition.

Our son in law got himself a job (engineering), took the papers/passport down to London and got his work visa stamped with no hassles. He was lucky in that the company he applied to flew him out there for an interview, but he could have done the same thing if he had flown out there to look for work and had his visa stamped in Wellington.

Don't get the idea that the nzis are obstructive, they are just doing their best, (whatever your view of the system) to get the right people for NZ and avoid the spongers etc.

Sometimes you just have to stop fretting about things and take a chance, just get yourselves over there. Worst case scenerio you don't get a job offer while you are there (Not very likely) then you just treat it as one of lifes experiences and move on, the only thing you will be down on is money and a good holiday can have that effect!

Don't lose sight of the fact that a work visa is not the same as permanent residency so is not so complicated and you can sort out the perm. residency at a later date. He (or she) who dares wins.

Veronica I could hug you - that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

We're booking flights next week to go to S.Island for a month - no looking back, and, as you say if we don't find work will be a nice holiday and although we have sold our main residence we have a flat in Sussex to fall back on. Nice One

*hugs*

Have a look at another string: http://emigratenz.org/community/viewtopic.php?t=350&sid=db466d6640f6a027590e774c94ada0df

And a very valid comment was made to the effect that employers want to see you are commited to NZ and if they offer you the job you are staying there to take it.
