I was looking through the memberlist http://emigratenz.org/community/memberlist.php and I see that so far it includes people from America, Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Northern Ireland, Russia, Scotland and presumably a few other locations too, most of whom have yet to take that big step from reading posts to making posts.
There must be a huge collective I.Q. out there and I was wondering:
Why are you thinking about emigrating? And why New Zealand?
If you've not posted yet, or if you've already posted and want to post some more, why not share some of that huge I.Q. in this thread so we can share a little of each others' plans, hopes and dreams for the future?

Why I'm thinking of emigrating I said in another post.
| Quote: | | I've had enough of GB plc. Litter, bad manners, street crime, dirty trains, broken trains, vandals, traffic cones, Tony and Cherie, etc, etc, etc.............................I just want out. It has to be an English speaking country and from what I know and from reading on the internet New Zealand sounds best. I'm a maths teacher so I'm in the lucky position that getting work anywhere shouldn't be a problem. |
Why NZ?
Because I've always wanted the chance to have a few acres of land, to keep a few animals, grew some vegies and live the good life while keeping the security of a salary. We can afford land in NZ and from everything I've read, there's a great growing climate. It sounds ideal.

I've got to emigrate because if I suffer many more winters with 6 hours of daylight I'll go mad . |

| Sub tropical /Temperate North Island, clean beaches, friendly natives ( I haven't met a Kiwi I didn't like), Volcanoes, Mountains, Bush, Spectacular South Island, Rain forests, the Canterbury plains, Glaciers, Breathtaking coastlines, 56 million less people than in Blighty in a country the same size! It's like the best the world has to offer all in one uncrowded place! I lived there for 3 years from 1987 to 1991.....I'm going back next year but not for the reasons many have given such a Britain has gone to the dogs, Britain has it's problems admittidly but so has anywhere ...I firmly believe that if that is your only motivation for going it's not good enough! So enough of the other mans grass is always greener argument, NZ is not perfect either despite my opening statements to wet your appetites you have to be prepared to open your mind a bit further than that or you'll be very dissapointed when you get there and the gloss has worn off. Treat it as a new and exciting chapter in your life, be prepared to put some effort into integrating with the people and adapting to it's customs and culture, remember that you are the immigrant and you wont go far wrong! I'm going back because I passionately love the country in it's own right and for what it is not for any comparisons I'm making with Britain. I love the culture, the space, the people and the lifestyle. Why did I come back then I hear you ask? It's personal so I'm not telling! Anyway the time is now right for me and my new family to return so we're going back for double helpings of everything God willing (and NZIS willing of course). |

Obviously Brummies (i.e. great minds) think alike . Many of the reasons that Karl (tsmith) has listed are the reasons that I wish to (eventually) emigrate to NZ. I lived there for almost a year back in 2000/01 and fell in love
Many people ask why I want to live there and the first answer I give is the now cliched "because of the quality of life, not just for me, but for my family - and they are my priority". They all ask the same questions about missing family, missing blighty, the switch from football to rugby and many more. These are obviously concerns, but they can be solved with a positive attitude and a little persuasion.
New Zealand is a long way away, but I believe that the opportunities afforded to me and my future children, the scenery, attitude of Kiwis, lifestyle etc available to people moving to NZ are so great that they can easily out-weigh any misgivings I have about moving there for the rest of my life.
I can't wait. . .

hi ya! my family and i tried it out and loved the place. we figure that if we have to work and pay taxes we may as well do it in one beatiful place, like nz.besides, we think our children will have a much better future, and i for one will add years to my life living in such a stress free atmosphere.as my whangarei freind says"no worries bro'"
and the air is fresher too, when you've stood in the snow on mt ruapahu, and breathed in real unpolluted air you will know what i mean.
HOLD THE BOAT,WE ARE ON OUR WAY, |

Glad to see that many of the responses mirror my wife and my reasoning for moving to NZ! I don't have to tell you about the issues we have here in the states; overpopulation, smog, litter, negative attitudes, too many guns and violence, a sea of gas-guzzling SUV's, not to mention having a "President" that lost the popular vote and what he's done over the past three years. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud to be an American, I love what we generally stand for and the freedoms we cherish. Hopefully the leadership situation will change next election...and hopefully we'll be voting by absentee ballot in NZ!
That being said, New Zealand reminds me of the U.S. about 30 or 40 years ago, particularly my home state of California. It's not too crowded, Kiwis have a positive attitude, the air is clean and so are the cities and towns. The concept of "doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do" is alive and well. Of course, the pristine beaches, rolling green hills, beautiful lakes, rivers and streams are the icing on the cake.
We've traveled quite a lot...loved Europe, (even England! ), but no place has felt more comfortable, not to mention affordable, than the land of the long, white cloud.
We have no illusions that NZ is perfect however. Having lived in Hawaii I understand the racial discord and the Maoris' issues with Anglo history...can't blame them. But all-in-all we feel that there are some great opportunities to assimilate, enjoy and support the Kiwi culture. We have no intention of trying to bring the U.S. to N.Z., so we'll do our best to fit in ASAP!
AND we positively LOVE the All Blacks!! (They'll win the Cup next year!)
Cheers and good luck!
Rich
P.S. We can only speak for ourselves, not all Americans, but we know an awful lot of people that feel exactly as we do...hopefully they won't ALL move to NZ!! |

I have considered emigrating to other countries as well, such as the US, Canada, and Australia. The primary goal is to provide a better life for my grwoing family.
My relatives in the US actually discouraged me from going to the US.
I have been to Canada and didn't like the weather.
Australia's immigration policies seem to be too restrictive.
I don't have relatives in New Zealand , the weather is good , and Kiwis seem to be more immigrant friendly, . Need I say more?

Hello and Happy christmas .
I have been investigating New Zeland for about 6 month and it seems to me that it is a land of opportunity; I'm seriously considering relocating my young family from the U.S.
We really like the idea of no nukes and low corruption.
This is a great web site which I just happened to come across . I see many questions and answers which have already been on my mind and plan to check back regularly. |

from reading some of the other posts i understand why so many people, especially those like me from the uk, just want out, out, out!
great britain was great in the 70's especially for me. i grew up on the streets of london and was able to play out until late and was never in danger of being snatched or hurt by some creepo!
now, in this day and age, the uk is a country of too many economic immigrants flooding our country, violence is way out of control, drugs as easy as sweets to get, and the law favours the criminal, not the victims!
the list is endless!! plus the fact that decent housing is way out of most people's reach, especially mine!
my kids cannot play out because of stranger danger. the elderly of this country are treated abysmally and are neglected dreadfully. out of sight out of mind, i think is the phrase used by many politicians these days.
i just want to grow old disgracefully, somewhere safe and clean and where i won't have to see tony grinning inanely at me, and where my kids can have a future, not just an existance.
sorry for ranting. just had to get it off my chest.

Welcome Swampbuck! Good to hear from another North American. Where are you located in Florida? My wife and I have always enjoyed our visits there.
Keep us posted on your progress. Have you visited NZ yet? Although it's a wonderful place to think about moving to, a visit (a couple of weeks at least) is a prerequisite...believe it or not, not everyone thinks it's the perfect place to settle down...which is understandable. The laid-back lifestyle, lower wages and "small-town" atmosphere (anywhere outside of Auckland) isn't for everyone. But for us, it's just what the doctor ordered!
Although it's been a lot of work, we're finally ready to lodge our application in a couple of weeks (with the assistance of a Kiwi consulting firm) and hope to be "invited" soon.
Cheers and Happy New Year All!

I want to leave England for many reasons, not least of all our corrupt government/dictatorship and their total ineptitude in running a country. I dont want my children growing up to mirror the total wasters that i see all the other local kids turning into. The spiralling taxes and bogus immigrants that we have to pay for when our own countrymen go without. Those are just a few of the reasons, i could go on all day.
Why NZ? well the main reason is that my aunt moved there and says its fantastic, a more mellow pace of life and great for the kids. Add to that the fact that if i come over i will be totally debt free for the rest of my life (sale of my house) I would hope to start my own plumbing company in the future which is impossible over here with all the regulations and extra taxes you have to pay. And i want to go to a place where people are friendly. Oh and one last thing: the scenery from the LOTR films...... wow, you can give me all that lush countryside all day long |

Kia Ora ! Hmm...good question! Why New Zealand?...
After spending my first 23 years under a communist regime then try to build something in my own country,I've decided it is better for me and my family to emigrate in NZ; but why NZ? First interes was the rugby and the All Blacks, then I >meet< newzealanders on the net irc. so I improved my knowledge about New Zealand and his people, and I even try to learn a little maori, like I start to learn gaelic before...I find very nice people the Kiwis ,no ofence for other nation, but they are so diferent in the good way from the europeans;I don't wanna say that the europeans are defenitly bad, but I feel the Kiwis land and people suit me,and of course it is also a mater of geography, clima etc...
Some of my friend ask me ,why NZ is too far 17000km!...Well a reason is because is too far ! I don't see NZ as the paradise on Earth or just thinking that the grass are greener in the other country,it's just as I said , I feel that NZ and his people suit me ,and I am saying that after two years of talking with Kiwis on the net and searching for NZ information...It's like I felt in love from somebody 's picture
I know that most of the information about NZ I get are very comercial and face only the good sides of NZ, but this is generaly in the world,to present a country with his nice and good faces...I think I know to choose what is comercial and what not...
Maybe I'm wrong ,but I will be never convince about that ,only if I will go, ever, there! And I wann go ! God help me ! ]
Have a nice and peaceful New Year everybody. Please excuse my not so acurate english -Alaisdar |

Hello Rich , We are from the central west coast . Haven't been there yet but have had good vibes since I've started to check it out , also like the idea of the laid back , small town atmosphere. I've also been thinking of a consulting agent , I'll bet they take alot of the wondering off your mind.
Good to hear from another yank . Good luck ! Best wishes for 2004 |
