| I am due to move to Dunedin NZ in January and in a dilemma whether to take the television. Some people say it won't work due to the frequency the signal is transmitted at, but it only sounds as there guessing at it. Is there any one who knows for sure? |

Hi!
Tvs and VCRs from the UK do not work in Australia and NZ. They have a different system to us and only local bought stuff will work. Also, we have been told that electrical stuff, cars and furniture are cheaper than here and have decided to take as little as possible. We are selling all our furniture and just taking clothes and special stuff plus books and cds (and the kids!!! ).
The best source of info about all things NZ we have got from a book called, Living and Working in New Zealand - A Survival Handbook by Mark Hempshell and published by Survival Books ( www.survivalbooks.net). You can order it through Amazon! It tells you all the boring but really important stuff like how to buy a house, how to get your telephone connected and what kind of TVs work!
Hope this helps,
Wendy |

I don't know anyone who has brought a TV to New Zealand, so I'm not sure. I've not read anywhere that it's recommended.
Most cars here are imported from Japanese auctions. The radios in these cars need to be modified to work because broadcasts here are on different frequencies from Japan.
We brought in a radio from the UK and we can't listen to all of the FM stations here on it. Only a few that are broadcasting in the right frequency range.
Video tapes from the UK work perfectly well in the video players here.
Dieter has a point about the quality of TV programmes in New Zealand. We certainly spend less time watching TV here. |

I looked deep into this before sadly departing with my beautiful widescreen tv. In NZ the TV's are PAL B in the uk they are Pal I. The sound is the problem not the picture. There are people who will tinker with them to change the sound frequency, but I couldnt find one. In NZ widescreen has not taken off like in the uk. A basic widescreen 32" can cost £1000 upwards. Our tv that we purchased here in NZ is Pal B/G so theoreticly if your tv is pal I & B/G it should work. But I didnt feel confident enough to risk it! All our videos work on the local bought video and we had to get a multi region DVD player as this is a different zone.
With all there is to offer here, who needs Tv anyway?!!! |

The new high of the Kiwi dollar might be hurting exporters, but it is providing importers with a boom just before the Christmas shopping season.
Jason Bell of Noel Leeming says some goods have never been so cheap.
"The product that we're buying from suppliers is obviously far cheaper because of that exchange rate and because of the competitive nature of this industry those price points get passed straight on to the consumer."
For example, a 35cm television cost about $300 a year ago, now it's under $200 - and average digital cameras are down 44%.

I have been told here that if we take a UK tv with us we will get the sound problems due to the slight changes in the pal standard between NZ & UK.
One solution we were told about is to purchase a VCR in NZ and use this as the tuner for the TV. You can then feed the NZ VCR into the UK TV via scart. This way the TV is only used as a display.
Does anyone know if this will work as we have seen a nice 27" widescreen LCD TV here that we are interested in?
Cheers for any advice

Hi!
Don't bring tvs to NZ unless you really want to. They have lots of very good widescreen, flatscreen, digital, rear projection and ultra thin tvs here. They also have cheap and perfectly adequate tvs. We bought a basic tv which will eventually go in the kids room for $245 and a DVD player for $99. We will upgrade to a flash model as and when. Flash tvs cost anything from $700 to $9000. They don't seem inferior to those you can buy in the UK and if anything are a bit cheaper.
Same goes for most electrical stuff!

Can you buy a decoder that will work with a UK TV and if so how much are they?
Cheers for any advice. |

Hi Mike
Here's a company in the U.S. that sells TV signal converters (all PAL variants, etc.). Might be one in your neck of the woods as well. This will give you an idea of price too.

| We brought our vidoe recorder with us from the UK and it does not work properly on the tv we brought here. There is no sound. I took it down to an electronics place in town, and they said there that they cannot convert video recorders over but its not a problem with tv's. They told me that UK run PAL 6Meg's and here its PAL 5.5Megs. As mentioned before in the previous messages the price of electrical goods are quite cheap in NZ. Also there are plenty of second hand places, ie Cash Converters. When we bought new it paid to shop around and haggle the prices between electrical stores, also if you pay cash they give you a discount, its amazing how much you can save. |

Hi all,
Our UK TV did not work initially out here. We had the option of buying a NZ VCR to try and use as a tuner but we decided we wanted Cable TV (Saturn TV through Telstra) anyway. When the guy came round to set that up he was able to tune in the tv through the decoder so it all works fine with full picture/sound. No need for NZ VCR.
Our UK VCR works in conjunction with the Cable TV and we are able to record it and play our own tapes.
The DVD player works as usual.
Definately glad we brought the main TV.
The portable TV would have probablybeen best left in the UK I think. It doesn't work on its own. Would need to try it with an NZ VCR and for the cost of that could have bought new portable TV over here. Oh well, live and learn.
Hope that helps someone make a decision

Tv or not to TV that is the question!
My parnter and I are moving to NZ - I actually start work on the 5th of July. AAAAAARGH so little time...
anyways sould I sell my TV and buy a new one in NZ. The thing is, it is a good tv. 36" w/s with DTS and external speakers. I haven't seen an equivalent in NZ yet. 36" isn't popular
What are the approx shipping costs for the tv? |
