Does anyone know how long it takes to get a work permit? My husbands plan was to come for 3 months and hopefully find a job.He has been talking to some employers and there is one in particular in Auckland that sounds very promising.Of course he doesn't know for sure whether he will get the position but we are hopeful as the employer is aware of having to go through extra steps to hire him and seems like a great guy.So now i'm wondering is 3 months long enough to get everything pushed through? Should he go there on a longer visa instead? Should he not say he is there looking for a job? Will they look through his paperwork he is bringing? I will not be going with him at first, will I and our kids still need a health exam for him to get a work permit or is that only for perm res?I wrote a NZ immigration consultant awhile back but never got a reply and I want to make sure we are doing everything right.
We would really appreciate any help or advice.

Hi Michelle, provided the job is on the OSL or POL, if you take along the correct paperwork to the local NZIS office in New Zealand, the permit can generally be issued on the same day. If the job is not on these lists and the employer has already had a labour market check carried out, to establish that there are no Kiwi workers available, again the permit can be issued almost immediately.

If you need to wait for a labour market check to be carried out, this can take around a month.

tomparis's recent post is also interesting - I presume he applied for his permit in the UK.

A big round of applause for NZIS, they were very efficient, friendly and helpful all the way through initial questions to processing our visas. It took them just 5 working days from receipt of our application to issuing. They'd set our expectation that it would be 4-9 weeks, so we were very happy.

Well Done NZIS

Thanks so much JCM!! Hopefully if he does get a job offer when he is there we will actually be able to find a consultant who will talk to us,this process can be very confusing and we don't want to make alot of mistakes.
