I am considering trying to get access to NZ by getting a job in NZ and once established, applying for residency.
My question is, what is the process? Should I find a job then apply for a work permit or vice versa? How long does it take to get the required permit?

Hi Pete I wondered about that a bit. Have a look here for answers that might be what you need.

Thanks for the link. My situation differs slightly from the link you gave me because I would try and get a job from the UK.

I did have a look to see how I scored on the points basis as well but I don't know if my profession scores (that particular page on the site wasn't available).

Hello Pete. Assuming you're thinking of coming permanently, you must have a job offer before you can apply for a work permit.

If you're entitled to come via the "club 18 - 30" working holiday route, you can get a permit to work in temporary employment for a year without the need of a job offer. Once you're here with the working holiday visa you can, if you wish, search for permanent work. If you're successful in your search and get a valid job offer you can then apply for a full blown work permit or, if you have enough points, permanent residence.

Or perhaps you could get enough points for permanent residence without the need for a job offer? Do you mind saying what your profession is?

In terms of timescales, near the end of the thread that Gregg linked to above, there are posts from JCM and goldwheels which are very useful and describe the timescales involved.

I hope that helps. Smile
