Hi all
fingers crossed I can explain my question clearly? Nutcase
We are going to submit our EOI (125pts no job offer) but employers are looking for someone who can start work before Sept/Oct so hubby will apply for Work Permit from within NZ (once he has a job offer) Hubby is a Diesel Mechanic so is on POL but there is that many categories under work permit I am confused!
From what I understand there is general work visa/permit category which doesn't require Police certs and Medicals so long as the permit is for less than 24 mths this is better for us because we aleady have police certs just got to get medicals done which we will be submitting with PR application and hopefully residency should be approved well within 24 mths! The thing is can POL's apply under this category? and does the $45,000 NZD rule apply? Uhoh
Then there is the WTR under POL category if he goes down this route does he need to be earning min of $45,000 NZD or is this only if he applies for residency at the end of it, because of course we will be applying for residency throuh SMC also are police certs & medicals needed for this route because I would hate to be paying twice!
All we want is hubby to go to NZ have interviews get job offer walk into NZIS branch in NZ with all paperwork come out with Work Permit, submit EOI and be pulled from UK as I will still be here with the kids waiting for the house to go through while hubby is working in NZ! Instead because he is on POL he has to be earning min of $45,000nzd before overtime etc... but if he wasn't on POL he could apply for general work permit and earn $40,000nzd and that would be fine? Confused
Can someone please tell me if I am right in my understanding of this or have I confused myself with Data overload again? Nutcase Hmmm

As I understand it...

Once hubby has a job...your best bet is to go down the WTR residence route because your offer of employment is on the POL. It is much quicker than applying for PR, and could just about be done for October if you get cracking straight away.
This would require you to get police checks and medicals done; you've got the first and the second doesn't take long at all once you've found a local panel doctor. Costs of course, but as you intend to stay in NZ, you'd have to get medicals done at some point (E.g. for PR application). It might be worth doing those now before going over the NZ...they last 3 months anyway which will take you up until end of October.
(I don't know if you would need to get a second load of medicals done for your PR application though?

BIG advantage of WTR is that it automatically leads to PR after two years, without having to mess about with points, EOIs and the rest of it. It is also relatively easy for the employer because if the job is on the POL, they don't have to get a Labour Survey done before getting Govt agreement.
Partner would also get an open work visa through the Family category...i.e. qualifies for any job, although the WTR visa would be tied to the POL occupation.
As for as I can tell, the $45,000 rule does not apply to POL applications....just for exceptional talent stream.

My brother is out working in NZ at the moment on a general work visa, and he needed to medicals and police checks for this too.

How close is your husband to getting a job? Does he have a provisional offer from this employer or just going out for interview? Your post was a bit vague on this...

Hi Graham
He's between the provisional offer and just going out! Rolling Eyes Hopefully we should know more by the end of the week fingers crossed We want to get PR as soon as poss as we have 4 little ones and feel like we need that security otherwise we would just go WTR route! It's the medical and police certs we need to be sure of. I think I'll have to try and ring New Zealand House in London tomorrow and hope I get through to someone helpful and reading earlier posts if looks like theres a 50 - 50 chance of that fingers crossed

When I've used NZ House, I have sometimes phoned twice with the same question to ensure I get a consistent answer.
Perhaps a bit of overkill, but it can be reassuring to hear the same answer from a second adviser. Means you don't go off and plan ahead based on one person's opinion on matters which can sometimes be rather subjective.

Now that sounds like a sound policy to me.
